Master's in Early Childhood Education in Massachusetts

Compare cost, licensure paths, formats, and outcomes across top MA schools

What you’ll learn in this article…

  • Fitchburg State lists in-state graduate tuition at $6,246, the lowest here.
  • Choose initial or professional PreK-2 licensure first; it narrows your options.
  • Endicott College's hybrid M.Ed. posts the highest program-level median earnings.

Massachusetts awards two early childhood teaching licenses, Initial and Professional, and a master's in the field can lead to either one. That single distinction sorts the state's programs faster than tuition or delivery format does.

A career changer needs a program that recommends for the Initial PreK-2 license and builds supervised practicum hours into the degree. A teacher already licensed needs one that treats that license as a prerequisite and counts toward Professional status. The diploma reads the same; the admissions standards, coursework, and timeline do not.

Districts hire and advance teachers on the license, not the degree title, so settling the track matters before comparing anything else.

Initial or Professional? How Prek–2 Licensure Shapes Your Program Choice

A PreK, 2 master's in Massachusetts leads to one of two licenses, and which one you choose matters. The two licenses serve different stages of a teaching career.

Initial vs. Professional License

The Initial license is the entry credential. It requires a bachelor's degree, an approved preparation route, and passing MTEL scores: Early Childhood (72) and Foundations of Reading (190). The older MTEL Reading (62) can substitute for Foundations of Reading, and DESE also recognizes approved alternative assessments. Candidates need a Communication and Literacy result too, either the MTEL Reading and Writing test or an approved alternative. DESE requires 300 practicum hours: 100 in PreK, K and 200 in grades 1-2, with at least one setting serving children with disabilities. Core academic teachers also need a Sheltered English Immersion or Bilingual Education endorsement.

The Professional license comes later. You must hold the Initial license in the same field, work three years, finish a one-year induction program with a mentor, and log 50 mentored hours beyond induction through an approved pathway. An Initial license lasts five years of employment, extendable once, and must be advanced. A Professional license runs five calendar years and renews every five years.

Which Program Fits You

  • Career changers: Look for an initial licensure track. It bundles coursework, the 300-hour practicum, and MTEL preparation. Salem State's Initial License master's and Bridgewater State's Initial Licensure option are built for this route.
  • Licensed teachers: Look for a professional licensure track. Westfield State's Professional M.Ed. and Bridgewater State's Professional Licensure option fit here.

DESE treats MTEL as a licensure requirement, so each program sets its own policy on whether you must pass before you continue or finish.

Your Takeaway

Before you apply, confirm that the program's coursework and practicum are DESE-approved for licensure. A degree from a program without that approval may leave you without a license.

Online, Hybrid, or on Campus: Where Fieldwork Still Happens in Person

Massachusetts early childhood programs increasingly deliver coursework online, but licensure still depends on supervised time in a real PreK-2 setting.

Delivery Formats

Fitchburg State, Gordon College, and Bay Path are fully online. Merrimack, Springfield College, Framingham State, and Cambridge College are hybrid. Stonehill lets you take core courses online or in person at Easton, Boston, or Cape Cod. Westfield State, UMass Amherst, and UMass Boston are campus-based. Salem State and Bridgewater are classified as campus programs here, but their program pages describe online evening courses and online, in-person, or combined options.

Practicum Hours and Placements

Online does not mean remote fieldwork. Placements generally have to be in Massachusetts, and the hours are substantial:

  • Endicott and Stonehill: 300 hours, split into 100 in PreK-K and 200 in grades 1-2. Endicott approves your placement, supervisor, and hours before you enroll in the practicum.
  • Salem State: 300 hours.2 Many students use their own classrooms as lead teachers, paraprofessionals, or assistant teachers, and a Massachusetts EEC lead-teacher credential may reduce the requirement.
  • Merrimack: 450 clinical hours in a Massachusetts setting near your permanent residence.1 Using your current full-time job needs Director approval.
  • Boston College: one school day a week for 10 weeks of pre-practicum in greater Boston, then a semester-long practicum five days a week.3
  • Springfield College: field-based work in every course, usually 15 to 20 hours a week.

Length and Start Dates

Springfield College runs about 24 months. Boston College takes roughly 18 to 24 months and starts in fall, spring, or summer. Fitchburg's online route can finish in about 2.5 years, with up to six allowed. Bay Path starts each May and September.

Scheduling Takeaway

If you work full time or have young children, treat the final practicum as the hard part of the schedule. Evening coursework fits around a job, but a full-time student-teaching semester usually does not. Ask each program early whether your current classroom can count, or whether you need to arrange leave or savings for that semester.

Admission Requirements, GRE Waivers, and Non-Education Bachelor's Applicants

UMass Amherst's early childhood master's admits a bachelor's in any field and does not require the GRE, but it expects documented experience with young children, a practicum can satisfy that, and it closes applications on December 1.

Where the GRE Stands

Several programs here state their policy outright. UMass Amherst, Boston College, and UMass Lowell do not require the GRE, and UMass Lowell has dropped both the GRE and GMAT for School of Education master's degrees. American International College lists the GRE as optional supporting evidence for applicants below a 3.0 rather than a formal waiver. Where a program publishes nothing either way, confirm before you register for a test seat.

Applicants Without an Education Degree

  • UMass Amherst: any-field bachelor's accepted, with child-related experience required.
  • Boston University: welcomes varied backgrounds, though its shorter 34-credit path is built for people who already hold an early childhood or elementary education degree, and the program is non-licensure for those not seeking public-school licensure.
  • Worcester State: normally expects an Initial License or equivalent, with exceptions handled case by case.
  • American International: accepts non-education majors who complete prerequisite coursework in child development, child psychology, or developmental psychology.

GPA, Tests, and Deadlines

Published GPA minimums run from 2.75 at Worcester State to 3.0 at American International, with Bridgewater State and Westfield State at 2.8. Bridgewater also requires the MTEL Foundations of Reading or Early Childhood test, and Westfield requires MTEL subject-matter tests. Deadlines vary by intake: UMass Amherst on December 1, Boston College on November 1, 2026 for Spring 2027, and Boston University on December 15, 2026 for Spring 2027. Bridgewater and American International admit on a rolling basis, and Bridgewater moves incomplete files to the next term.

Confirm the Track Before You Apply

Ask admissions one question in writing: does this admission point to the PreK-2 license? Two applicants with similar transcripts can end up in different tracks, and the answer decides whether the degree does what you need it to do.

Accreditation and Moving Your License Out of State

Two accreditations, two different meanings

NECHE, the New England Commission of Higher Education, accredits the institution as a whole, meaning the college itself meets regional academic standards and its credits and degrees will be recognized elsewhere. Lesley University and Boston College both hold NECHE accreditation. CAEP accreditation is narrower and applies specifically to educator preparation. The two are not interchangeable, and institutional accreditation alone says nothing about whether a given teacher preparation program carries CAEP status. If CAEP matters to you, ask the program directly rather than assuming it from the university's regional accreditor.

What matters most for licensure in Massachusetts is state approval. Lesley's M.Ed. in Early Childhood and its version with ESL add-license preparation both lead to Massachusetts DESE Initial Licensure in Early Childhood (PreK-2), and Boston College's Lynch School programs are DESE-approved for Initial licensure as well.2

Reciprocity is a pathway, not a transfer

Massachusetts participates in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement with every state and the District of Columbia. That agreement can open a licensure pathway if you completed a state-approved preparation program or hold the equivalent of an Initial license. It does not move your license for you. The receiving state decides which license you qualify for and can still require its own tests, coursework, degree, experience, or background checks. Massachusetts states plainly that the agreement exempts no one from the requirements attached to the license sought.

One check before you enroll

Find the program's licensure disclosure page and look up the state you might move to. Lesley, for example, names Alabama, California, Maine, Oregon, Texas and others as states where graduates must hold the Massachusetts Initial license first.1

How Do Graduates' Earnings Compare With Program Debt?

Three Massachusetts early childhood master's programs report both a median earnings figure and a median debt figure for the program itself. Five years after completion, graduates of each program earn roughly two and a half to three and a half times their typical borrowing. Schools that do not report both figures at the program level are left off the chart rather than filled in with campus-wide averages.

One Program-Level Earnings Benchmark Worth Knowing

Endicott College's hybrid M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education posts the highest program-level median earnings in our Massachusetts data.

Decide first whether you need initial licensure to start teaching or professional licensure to advance a career you've already begun, because that choice determines which programs are even worth comparing.
